Imbros Gorge in Crete is a different walking route from Samaria, with a usual downhill start near Imbros village and a finish at Komitades. It can fit a day around Sfakia without copying Samaria's boat-return plan. You still need to connect the two ends by road or return on foot where allowed.
Choose an independent Imbros walk if you can arrange both road ends yourself. Choose an excursion only when its exact pickup and return remove a problem you actually have. Check the trail's own access and admission, not Samaria's. A shorter route does not promise smooth footing, and neither a ticket page nor a tour listing proves today's permission to enter.
Imbros Gorge Crete at a glance
The Municipality of Sfakia places the entrance just beyond Imbros village and the exit at Komitades. Its guide gives an 8 km route and an indicative walking time of two hours. That is a tourism estimate, not a pace target or a door-to-door transfer time.
Visit Greece also identifies those endpoints. Use their names when arranging a lift. “Imbros Gorge” alone can mean the start, a point on the path or the whole attraction. A driver needs a specific meeting place.
Compare the walking demands
Imbros, Agia Irini and Samaria should be compared as whole days. Samaria's full crossing finishes on the Agia Roumeli side, where many visitors use a boat. Imbros's downhill route finishes near Komitades. Agia Irini's exit is separate from Sougia. The return problem is therefore different for each.
Do not rank them only by length. A narrow rocky route can be tiring even when it takes less time than a longer gorge. Think about uneven steps, heat and the uphill work if you intend to reverse the route. Check how those demands fit your party.
The Agia Irini comparison helps if you are still choosing between the western route and Imbros. Select the permitted trail whose endpoints fit your base, rather than choosing a famous name and trying to repair its travel plan later.
Entrances and onward transport
A downhill through-walk leaves you at the opposite end from the start. If you drive to the north, arrange car recovery. If you park near the intended finish, first confirm that parking is permitted, then arrange travel to the start. Do not count an informal lift as a confirmed service.
For public transport, check KTEL Chania–Rethymno for the actual date and stop. A bus on the main road is useful only if its boarding point and time suit your route. Keep the bus leg separate from any walk between the gorge exit and that stop.
With a private transfer, get the pickup point and total quote in writing. State whether you need the north entrance, Komitades or another base. Ask what happens if the trail closes or your arrival time differs from the plan.
Current admission and access
Facts checked: 15 October 2026. The official Imbros ticket portal states that an entrance ticket is required. It is a separate portal from Samaria's. The empty checkout total is not an admission price, so we do not quote it as one.
Read the portal's current general information and safety rules before buying. Check the exact visit date, admission category and any documents needed for that category. A purchase receipt is not a promise that weather or trail conditions cannot affect entry.
Samaria's closure does not settle Imbros's status. Confirm the entrance you intend to use with the relevant authority. If regional weather is the reason for changing your day, assess that weather before choosing another gorge.
Independent walk or excursion
Independent road-based visit
Best for: Visitors who can match the start and finish with their own transport.
Evidence: The municipal and national tourism sources identify Imbros village and Komitades as the route ends.
Trade-off: You arrange admission and car recovery yourself. A shorter walk still leaves a one-way transport task.
Excursion with arranged transfers
Best for: Visitors whose departure area and return needs match a specific organiser's itinerary.
Evidence to request: A written route naming Imbros, the pickup location, the finish and any separate admission costs.
Trade-off: You follow the organiser's schedule. An escort is not necessarily a guide beside you for the entire walk.
These cards compare ways to visit. They do not claim a particular excursion is available. Before paying, check the actual supplier and cancellation terms. Confirm what happens if the gorge closes, rather than assuming a park closure automatically refunds all your separate travel costs.
Questions about Imbros
Can I use a Samaria ticket here?
Use the official admission destination for Imbros and check the ticket you are buying. The two gorges have separate portals and different routes. A Samaria booking or closure notice should not be read as permission for Imbros. Match the attraction name and visit date before completing a purchase.
Does a tour include a walking guide?
Only the actual itinerary can establish that. A package may provide a bus escort and return transport while leaving you to walk at your own pace. Ask who is present on the trail and what help is included. Do not treat the word “tour” as a full description of that service.
Is Komitades the same as Chora Sfakion?
No. The named gorge exit is Komitades. If your next destination is Chora Sfakion or another base, arrange that further leg. Keep the trail endpoint separate from the bus destination or ferry port you may use later. This avoids building a day around the wrong meeting point.
Can I decide on car recovery after the walk?
It is better to settle it first. You need a service that can take your party to the correct place at a workable time. Confirm the quote and meeting details before entering the trail. A map showing a road nearby does not establish that a taxi or bus will be available.
Verdict on Imbros Gorge in Crete
Imbros Gorge in Crete is worth comparing when its road-based endpoints fit your plans. Settle access and the return before choosing between an independent walk and an excursion. Use the Agia Irini and Samaria comparison if you still need to choose which gorge makes sense for your day.
