Agia Roumeli: Samaria exit village and nearby bases

Compare Agia Roumeli, Omalos and Chania as bases for a Samaria visit. Match the room to your entrance, boat travel and next day rather than a map pin.

Agia Roumeli is the coastal village associated with Samaria's southern end. After a full crossing, many walkers pause here before the next boat. It can also be a place to stay or the starting side of a permitted partial walk. The village is separate from the park entrance and boat boarding point.

Plan Agia Roumeli as a coastal destination with a sea connection, not a road pickup at the foot of the trail. Check the park notice separately from the boats. If you stay overnight, confirm the room and your arrival arrangements. If you leave the same day, fit food and any beach stop around the actual boarding requirements.

Agia Roumeli and the park exit

The Municipality of Sfakia's village account places Agia Roumeli at the southern side of Samaria. The national tourism guide describes the route from the mountains towards this coast.

Do not count the controlled park exit as the finish of every travel task. You still need to reach the village and the correct boat boarding point. A walking time that ends at the control does not include finding your departure or sitting down for a meal.

Old Agia Roumeli and the present coastal village also need to be distinguished. A heritage photograph or map label can concern a different point from the place where you will eat or board. Match the actual address before using a travel estimate.

From the walk to the village

Follow the permitted route and current signs after the southern exit. Keep the party together and agree where to meet if you separate in the village. Do not rely on a vague instruction to find one another “near the ferry” if there is a fixed departure to catch.

Keep the ticket and meeting point available offline. If an excursion supplies the return, follow its actual instructions. A ferry booking and a group meeting can have different requirements. This applies even when the boat serves the same place.

If a room is part of the plan, check where you should go on arrival and how late check-in works. The walk can take longer than you expect. Let the accommodation provider describe its own arrangement rather than assuming a reception desk remains open for every boat.

Food, waiting and a beach stop

Agia Roumeli has businesses that describe food and lodging on their own websites. Use the restaurant guide to compare those source-backed choices and the questions that remain for the day. Do not treat a business website as proof of today's kitchen hours.

The beach guide explains how to fit a coastal stop into the return. Check the boat first, then decide what time remains. A clear-looking sea or an inviting photograph is not a statement about swimming conditions at the moment you arrive.

If you want to camp, read the permission-first camping guide before planning an overnight. A village tent photograph does not establish an authorised campsite. Land outside the controlled park still needs its own permission and facility checks.

Compare the overnight bases

Base Main purpose Trade-off to keep visible
Agia Roumeli Time on the southern coast after the walk, or a permitted southern visit Sea access and the next departure shape the stay
Omalos area Being on the mountain side before a northern start The full crossing still ends away from the room or car
Chania A wider town stay with an outward transport plan You must reach the correct early boarding point

For a north-start night, compare Omalos hotels. The separate Omalos base guide explains the plateau's relationship to Xyloskalo. A room within that wider area is not automatically beside the entrance.

For a city stay, use where to stay in Chania. Choose with the actual morning pickup and late return in mind, rather than the broad label “near Samaria”. The room address should fit the transport you will use.

Ferry limitations and arrival planning

Use ANENDYK for the current sea routes. Select the actual origin and destination. Add the date. Keep any stops or vessel changes with the departure. A coastal village can be served by boats while park entry remains unavailable.

If you are staying, check the sea trip for both arrival and departure. A booked room does not guarantee that a boat can sail. Read the separate carrier and lodging terms before building a stay around tightly matched services.

If the day continues by bus, confirm the actual arrival port and road destination with the carrier. Sfakia and Sougia lead to different connections. Do not choose any available boat and assume it has the same onward return.

Current access and the wider park

Facts checked: 15 October 2026. NECCA's ticket portal reported both park entrances closed pending inspections, without a reopening date. A visit to Agia Roumeli does not grant an exception for the southern entrance.

The Samaria Gorge National Park guide puts the coast back into the whole visit. If you are comparing arranged travel, use the tour guide for the service questions before paying. Match the walking route and transport promises to the actual itinerary.

Village questions

Is the park exit the same as the boat point?

No. Keep the controlled exit, village and boarding point distinct. Your day can still include walking, finding the correct service and meeting a group after leaving the park. A timing estimate ending at the exit should not be used as proof that you can board a boat immediately.

Can I stay after the day visitors leave?

An overnight needs a real room confirmation and arrival arrangement with the property. Check the boats for both ends of the stay. Do not infer a room or late check-in from a general village guide. Park permission is separate, so staying by the coast does not guarantee a southern walk.

Is a tent an alternative to a room booking?

Only after the actual location and permission have been established. A campground listing or photograph is not enough by itself. Distinguish village land from protected park land and confirm the site's facilities and operating dates. If permission remains unclear, use a lodging arrangement whose provider can confirm the stay.

Should I eat before checking the return boat?

Settle the departure and boarding point first, then choose a meal that fits. Tell the restaurant if you have a fixed boat and ask about the current kitchen timing. An advertised menu or opening description does not establish how long service will take on the day you arrive.

Verdict on Agia Roumeli

Agia Roumeli deserves its own place in the day plan, beyond the phrase “end of the hike”. Separate the park exit from the coastal stop and next departure. Confirm the room or meal details you need, then let the actual boat and current entrance notice decide what fits.
