A Samaria Gorge hike is a long walk between the White Mountains and the south coast, with uneven ground and a separate return journey. The usual downhill plan starts at Xyloskalo and continues towards Agia Roumeli. Before comparing walking times, check whether the intended entrance and route are allowed on your date.

Plan the full hike as a mountain start, a long stony route and a coastal finish. NECCA describes about 13 km of main path plus about 2 km to Agia Roumeli. Those endpoints matter when matching a boat. Choose a partial walk only when allowed, and assess its return effort on its own. A transport ticket or a tour for sale does not prove the park is open.

Check access before a Samaria Gorge hike

Facts checked: 15 October 2026. The NECCA ticket portal reported both entrances closed pending inspections, without a reopening date. This guide explains how to plan an allowed visit. It does not confirm entry now.

Use the entrance-status page to distinguish the latest retained record from a future visit date. General visiting hours and the usual season do not override a closure. Read the authority again before leaving your base.

If the route is unavailable, compare Agia Irini and Imbros as separate trips with their own checks. A shorter gorge is not automatically open when Samaria is closed. Regional weather or other limits can affect more than one place.

The full route at a glance

NECCA's General Description panel names the main path and the two allowed entrances. The usual downhill sequence begins at Xyloskalo, passes through the upper wooded route and former Samaria village, then continues into the lower gorge. The coastal destination lies beyond the controlled southern exit.

The annotated route reference shows that order in original schematics. It separates the full crossing from a southern out-and-back. The diagrams are not navigation maps. They cannot prove that a route is open.

Do not confuse the former Samaria village with Agia Roumeli. The first is a stage inside the gorge. The second is the coastal settlement linked to the finish and sea transport. That difference matters when someone gives you a time “to the village”.

Distance, descent and endpoints

The official NECCA portal, under General Description, gives the following approximate route figures. They were checked on the date above. They describe the whole route, not a personal pace or a measured track recorded by this website.

Measure NECCA's description What it means for the plan
Main path Approximately 13 km The controlled gorge route is not the entire coastal arrival task
Southern entrance to Agia Roumeli Approximately another 2 km Include the ground beyond the park control
Full popular route Approximately 15 km, Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli Keep those endpoints attached to the distance
Starting altitude 1,227 m at Xyloskalo Starting height is not a claim of total total descent
Coastal endpoint altitude 0 m at Agia Roumeli A general mountain-to-sea description, not an elevation profile

Other guides can show different totals. A route may include a room, bus stop or extra coast walk beyond the stated endpoints. Check what is being measured before deciding that one number contradicts another. Do not compare a main-path distance with a door-to-door day as if they were the same.

The overall route descends, but that does not make every step effortless. Long sections on stones can tire legs and feet. A partial visit returning to the northern start also includes the climb back. Assess the actual route rather than only its net loss of height.

Route stages and breaks

The upper path, former village and lower gorge are useful orientation stages. They are not fixed promises about how quickly your party will move. Let the allowed route and your actual pace govern the day. Account for the ground as you find it.

NECCA's description says the early part passes through forest and the later route follows the rocky riverbed. It also describes crossings using small bridges or placed stones in some places. Those broad features help explain why a town-walk pace is a poor guide to the whole day.

Keep breaks within your overall time plan. A long stop early on can reduce the margin needed later for uneven ground or a slower walker. Do not turn another person's fast completion time into a target that forces your party to rush.

Follow current signs and staff directions, especially around exposed sections. Stop for photographs only where allowed and without blocking the route. The narrow lower passages are part of the walking route, not a separate road-accessible viewing platform.

Walking time and the boat

NECCA describes an average full-route walk of about six to seven hours including stops. This is an official general estimate, not a promised finish time. Your party may move at a different pace. The state of the path can also change. Keep enough room for the ground beyond the southern control and the carrier's boarding rules.

Set the return before the walk. Match the boat from Agia Roumeli to the actual onward bus or transfer. A ferry to a road-accessible port is only part of the plan if your room or car is elsewhere.

Do not use a timetable gap as proof that you can walk the route. Check park entry rules and your own preparation first. A service advertised after the hike does not shorten the walking task or remove the need to leave the park within its current limits.

The Samaria Gorge National Park guide explains the wider mountain-to-sea day. Use it to connect the walk with the base and return, rather than treating the last famous viewpoint as the end of every travel task.

Preparation and suitability

The difficulty guide breaks the demands into descent and footing, as well as fatigue. Compare those with recent walks your party has managed. A distance alone does not describe the repeated effort of uneven steps.

Choose footwear that fits the actual walking task and that you have used before. Do not make a long gorge day the first trial of an unfamiliar pair. Check the condition of soles and the fit with the socks you intend to wear.

Carry food and water suited to the plan. Use the official guidance for current facilities and drinking points. Do not assume that a marked rest place is a shop or that every old water point is operating. Keep the travel records and contact details with the walkers, not only in a parked car.

If your party's needs are not met by the full route, choose a different allowed visit. A southern partial walk can still involve rough ground and an uphill outward section. A northern out-and-back includes a climb to the start. Neither should be described as suitable for everyone.

Full crossing or southern partial walk?

The full crossing suits someone who wants the upper route as well as the lower gorge and can complete the long walk. It needs travel to the north and a return from the coast. Its advantage is the complete route sequence; its limit is the total walking and transport commitment.

The southern partial visit, often called the lazy way, focuses on an allowed part of the lower route. It returns to the coast over the same ground. The name does not promise easy footing, unrestricted entry or enough time between any two boats.

Current rules decide how far a partial visit may go. Do not assume that every late entry can reach a named landmark. Check the entrance, allowed extent and exit time before choosing a turnaround.

Season, heat and weather

Use the weather-source guide to distinguish the mountain approach from the coast. A forecast for one endpoint is not a forecast for every part of the gorge. Read current warnings and the park notice on its own.

The August planning page covers the questions of heat, exposure and timing without promising a named temperature or crowd level. A summer date does not prove the path is safe to use. A day can be within the normal season and still be restricted.

Check the official admission process only after reading access. The empty checkout total is not a fare, and a ticket receipt does not override a later closure. Keep the official categories and transport purchases separate in the budget.

Independent travel or an escorted trip

An independent plan gives you control over the services you book. It also leaves the task of matching them to you. Confirm the north-side arrival, sea leg and final road destination for the same date before deciding the day works.

An organised trip can coordinate some of those legs. Read the actual pickup, walking route and return. Ask whether guide or escort means someone walking beside the group or a person coordinating the bus. A package does not change the terrain or create an entry exception.

Compare complete scopes. Admission and ferry costs may be included or separate under the actual itinerary. Do not judge a package against only the price of a bus outward. The useful choice is the one that fits the walk and solves the finish you need.

Hike questions

Is the walk 13 km or 15 km?

NECCA separates about 13 km of main path from roughly another 2 km to Agia Roumeli. Its popular full route is about 15 km between Xyloskalo and the coastal village. Keep the endpoints with the figure. A longer door-to-door trip can include extra ground beyond either end.

Does downhill mean easy?

No. The route includes a long descent and uneven stones. Repeated steps can be tiring even when the overall height falls. Compare the actual terrain and time with your preparation. A shorter partial walk also has its own return effort, so choose it as a different route rather than an automatic easy version.

Can I decide on a ferry when I finish?

Do not rely on a return you have not checked. Check the dated boat and onward land service before the walk, including the final destination. If disruption happens later, follow the carriers' current advice. A hope of finding a spare departure or informal lift is not a complete original plan.

Does a tour guarantee access?

No. NECCA controls the entrances and can restrict the route. An available excursion or transport booking does not override that rule. Read the latest official notice before travel and the organiser's actual closure terms. The package also does not remove the walking demands or promise a named pace.

Verdict on the Samaria Gorge hike

Plan a Samaria Gorge hike from the entry check and route demands, then make the return fit. Keep the main path separate from the last walk to the coast. Choose the full crossing or an allowed partial visit for its actual effort, and settle the final sea and road legs before setting out.
