The Agia Roumeli ferry to Sougia is a westbound leg along Crete's south coast. It may fit a return towards western bases. It may also help with car recovery on the Omalos side. The boat gets you to Sougia. Check the road leg beyond that port separately.
Choose Sougia when its onward connection fits your final destination. Find the Agia Roumeli-to-Sougia direction and correct weekday. Check the timetable's validity period too. Then confirm the bus destination with KTEL. A westbound boat does not include every onward road leg. The ferry schedule does not establish park entry either.
Agia Roumeli ferry to Sougia: the westbound leg
The ANENDYK timetable has a separate Agia Roumeli–Sougia section. This is different from the eastbound journey towards Loutro and Hora Sfakion. Keep that distinction when comparing the two possible returns after a gorge walk.
If your car is near Xyloskalo, the west-side plan may fit. The timetable refers to onward buses towards Chania and Omalos. Confirm the actual bus with KTEL. Do not treat that reference as proof of every connection.
If your final base is Sougia, the ferry may be the last main transport leg. You still need to reach your room or parked vehicle from the boarding area. If your base is farther away, write down the next leg before buying the boat ticket.
A dated timetable example
Facts checked: 15 October 2026. The published table covers 7 September–31 October 2026. It lists 17:30 from Agia Roumeli to Sougia on each weekday. Tuesday also shows a 17:45 passenger-only entry. Use the full operator table for your date and later amendments.
Those are published departures, not a guarantee of operation or space. The timetable states that times are local. Its asterisk means passengers only, without vehicles. A vehicle booking therefore needs its own check against the exact departure.
Do not reverse the row to plan the outward trip. Sougia to Agia Roumeli has a different table. Some departures continue to Paleochora. Check that Sougia is a stop if you intend to leave there.

Save the row rather than only the time. If you later need to check a disruption, the direction and validity period will help the carrier identify which service you mean.
Tickets, luggage and boarding
Use the official booking link reached from ANENDYK. Before paying, confirm the traveller category, date and ports. A westbound return should not be booked under a similar-looking eastbound destination. Keep the confirmation available without mobile data.
For luggage beyond a normal day bag, check the carrier's conditions. If you need assistance or carry a bicycle, ask about that exact item or need. Do not infer a rule from what another passenger carried in a photograph.
Get to the boarding point in time to meet the carrier's instructions. The southern park exit is not the same place as the boat. Allow for the walk beyond the exit. Leave time to find the correct departure too.
Do not use a general fare on a tourism page as the cost of your ticket. The current booking selection and official fare conditions are the right sources. A quoted total should match the date and category you actually choose.
The Sougia bus connection
ANENDYK directs travellers to KTEL for confirmation of buses after a ship arrives at Sougia. Its route footnote names Chania and Omalos. That wording should not be simplified into “every boat includes a bus back”. Check which service and destination apply to your date.
Use KTEL Chania–Rethymno for its current schedules and official booking destination. If the aim is car recovery, confirm whether the service reaches the place where the car is parked. A bus labelled Omalos needs to be matched to the exact stop you require.
The Sougia to Omalos road leg needs its own service check. If you instead want Chania, check the bus destination rather than assuming both plans use the same vehicle or stopping pattern.
Ask what happens if the boat is late. A footnote describing a departure after a ship arrives is not the same as a blanket connection guarantee for every service. Keep the operators' current answers with your tickets.
Missed connections and overnight choices
If the onward bus cannot be confirmed before the day starts, resolve that gap first. Compare a prearranged transfer or a stay that you can actually reach. Do not enter a long walk on the assumption that someone at the finish will provide a lift.
If disruption happens during the day, follow the carrier and local staff. Confirm the new meeting point and destination before accepting a replacement plan. A taxi quote from Sougia to one place cannot be treated as a price for every mountain or coastal destination.
An overnight can be a separate travel choice, but check the room and arrival terms first. A ferry cancellation does not guarantee a free room or a refund from another provider. Keep each booking's conditions distinct.
Park access remains a separate check
At the source check above, NECCA's portal reported both Samaria entrances closed pending inspections, with no reopening date. The ferry can be relevant to a coastal trip even when the gorge is unavailable. It does not grant permission to enter.
If you want to compare the eastern return instead, use the Sfakia–Agia Roumeli transport guide. Choose the side that reaches your actual base, not simply whichever boat name appears first in a search.
For other sea directions from the village, use the Agia Roumeli ferry guide. Match the port to the required road destination before choosing a ticket.
Questions about the Sougia ferry
Does this boat take me to Omalos?
No. The sea leg ends at Sougia for a passenger leaving there. Omalos is an onward land destination. Confirm the dated KTEL service or a private transfer, including the exact stop near your parked car. A reference to a connection on the ferry page is not a combined ticket by itself.
Can I use the reverse timetable for my return?
No. Agia Roumeli to Sougia and Sougia to Agia Roumeli have separate published rows. Read the starting port and direction before the times. Keep the weekday and validity range with your selection, because a service in one direction may have a different pattern from the reverse trip.
Does the last published time guarantee a ride?
A published timetable is different from a guarantee that weather, capacity or another disruption cannot affect the service. Recheck current carrier information and follow boarding instructions. If your return depends on that sailing, settle a realistic response to disruption before you start the walking part of the day.
Is Sougia the same port as Sfakia?
No. Sougia is a west-side choice from Agia Roumeli, while Hora Sfakion is on the eastern return. They lead to different land connections. Match the port to your bus destination or car location before booking, so the sea ticket serves the whole plan rather than only part of it.
Verdict on the Agia Roumeli ferry to Sougia
The Agia Roumeli ferry to Sougia works as a return choice only when the next leg works too. Keep the published direction and date, confirm the onward destination and treat car recovery as its own task. Use the main transport reference if you still need to decide between east and west.
