For a bus from Chania to Samaria Gorge, look for the north-side service towards Omalos and Xyloskalo. Do not search for Agia Roumeli as if it were the same road destination. The full walk ends on the coast, so the outward bus is only the first part of the transport plan.

Check the northbound service for your actual date with KTEL Chania–Rethymno. Confirm that the destination serves the Xyloskalo entrance and get the boarding point from your ticket. Then arrange the return from the southern end separately. A bus listing does not confirm that the park is open or that the same bus will collect you after the walk.

Bus from Chania to Samaria Gorge: which destination?

ANENDYK's Samaria information describes the KTEL approach from Chania to the mountain side. The former park body's route account also links Chania, Omalos and Xyloskalo. The latter is an archive, so its old fares must not be reused.

Your useful destination is the entrance, not just the plateau name. If a timetable says Omalos, confirm the stop you need. A room in the wider Omalos area and the park entrance are separate places. Do not assume that any mountain-side ticket puts you at the control point.

Confirm a service for the day

Use KTEL's current website and follow its timetable or official ticket link. Select the departure point, destination and date. Check the weekday pattern and any seasonal limits. If the north-side service is not clear, ask KTEL about that route before making the rest of the plan.

We do not carry an old morning time forward as a daily departure. Facts checked: 15 October 2026. The source pages explain the route, while the current service must be checked for the traveller's selected date. A past summer schedule is not enough for an October visit or a later season.

Keep a copy of the result or ticket. Include the route heading, not only a departure time. If there is more than one stop listed, save the one where you must board and the one where you must leave the bus.

Station and boarding point

ANENDYK's information identifies Chania's central KTEL station at Kydonias and Partheniou Kelaidi. Confirm the current boarding instructions with KTEL and your ticket. Do not use a local city-bus stop or an airport coach stop simply because it also says Chania.

Work out how you will reach the station from your lodging. Check the entrance and your meeting point before the morning of the walk. If you need assistance or have extra luggage, arrange that with the bus company. This guide does not confirm a vehicle's facilities for a particular departure.

Tickets and the mountain arrival

Check the date and destination before buying. Read the luggage and cancellation terms attached to the actual booking. Do not assume that a normal passenger ticket includes park admission, the ferry or the bus home from the coast.

After arriving, follow the park's current entrance instructions. A ticket to the mountain side is transport to the area. It is not permission to walk through a closed control point. If staff say entry is unavailable, do not use an old route description to continue.

The return is a different route

A north-to-south crossing does not bring you back to the bus arrival point. It leads towards Agia Roumeli. Many return plans then use a boat to a road-accessible port and a further bus or transfer. Choose the whole chain before setting out.

If you need a west-side route to reach a car or the mountain area, read the Sougia to Omalos bus guide. That service has its own direction and date check. It is not simply the reverse of the Chania morning bus.

The Samaria transport reference compares the wider connections. Keep the arrival port attached to the correct onward bus, rather than treating all coastal returns as one route.

Access check before the bus booking

NECCA's portal reported both entrances closed pending inspections at the check above. No reopening date was stated. Recheck the authority before arranging a hike-led bus trip. A bus or tour that appears in a search cannot override the park's notice.

Bus questions

Is Omalos the same as Xyloskalo?

Omalos is the wider mountain approach, while Xyloskalo is the named northern park entrance. A service may use the broader destination name, so confirm the actual stop. Do not assume that a ticket to a village or plateau address automatically takes you to the entrance you need for the gorge.

Does this ticket include the return from Agia Roumeli?

Read the ticket terms rather than assuming that it does. A standalone bus to the north is only one leg. The full walk finishes on the southern side, with a separate sea and land return in many plans. Any combined package should list those included legs in writing.

Can I use a normal visiting season as proof of service?

No. A general park season and a dated bus schedule are different records. Check KTEL for the departure you need and NECCA for entry permission. Both checks should cover the intended day. A service mentioned in an old summer guide may not apply at another point in the year.

What if the bus runs but the park is closed?

The transport service does not grant entry. Read the current NECCA notice before leaving your base, then follow the staff at the entrance. Check the carrier's booking terms for your options. A park closure does not by itself establish the refund conditions for a separate bus ticket.

Verdict on the bus from Chania to Samaria Gorge

The bus from Chania to Samaria Gorge should be checked as a dated journey to the correct northern stop. Confirm boarding and park access first. Then make the southern return work on its own terms, rather than assuming that an outward bus solves the whole day.
