How to get back from Samaria Gorge: ferry and bus chains

Keep the return legs together

Choose a side to read its complete chain. The date and final destination below are your planning record, not a confirmed service.

Return side

Your date, destination and route choice stay in this browser. They are not sent to a provider.

Confirm the boat and onward road leg with their operators for the same date.

East via Hora Sfakion

  1. Agia Roumeli → Hora Sfakion: check direction, date range, weekday and any stops with ANENDYK.
  2. Hora Sfakion → your road destination: confirm the actual KTEL bus or private transfer and its boarding point.
  3. Arrival stop → final base: include the remaining local leg. A car at Xyloskalo needs a different recovery task.

State: Verify with operators for your date. No last connection is asserted.

West via Sougia

  1. Agia Roumeli → Sougia: check the westbound ANENDYK service for your day.
  2. Sougia → Chania or Omalos: confirm the exact bus destination and stop with KTEL. A ferry footnote is not a universal guarantee.
  3. Road stop → final base or car: name any gap to the actual room or parking place.

State: Verify with operators for your date. Tickets and connection terms may be separate.

How to get back from Samaria Gorge depends on where you need to finish: Chania, a western base or a car left near Xyloskalo. Start at Agia Roumeli for a north-to-south crossing, choose the suitable ferry port, then match the onward road leg. The port alone is rarely the final destination.

Write the return in legs before starting the walk. The east-side pattern uses a boat towards Hora Sfakion and an onward road service. The west-side pattern uses Sougia and a separately confirmed bus or transfer. A car at the north entrance adds a recovery task. No chain is confirmed until every required leg works for the same date.

How to get back from Samaria Gorge to your base

Put your room or car location at the end of the plan. Then work backwards. This avoids buying a boat that reaches a valid coastal port but leaves you without a way to the place you need that night.

The broad options below are orientation, not a current connection guarantee. Use the ANENDYK route page for the sea leg and KTEL for the bus. Confirm a private transfer with the actual operator if that is your choice.

East-side return via Sfakia

The east-side pattern is Agia Roumeli → Hora Sfakion → onward bus or transfer. Hora Sfakion is also called Chora Sfakion or Sfakia in ferry information. Keep the name on the actual ticket with the road connection you need.

ANENDYK's timetable directs passengers to confirm the bus from Sfakia with KTEL. Read the current route and its condition. Do not turn “after the ship arrives” into a promise that every bus waits for every ferry or serves every final base.

If you need Chania, check that destination and the arrival station. If you need another town after Chania, add that further leg. A connection that works only as far as the intercity station is incomplete when your room lies elsewhere.

West-side return via Sougia

The west-side pattern is Agia Roumeli → Sougia → the relevant bus or transfer. ANENDYK's route page names onward services towards Chania and Omalos for confirmation with KTEL. Those destinations serve different tasks.

For a car near the northern entrance, identify the exact stop you need. A plateau destination and a parking area are not the same thing. For a western coastal base, confirm that the selected boat and road plan actually return there.

Do not choose Sougia just because it appears closer on a map. The dated service and your final destination decide whether it is the useful side. A boat without a matching road leg is only part of a return.

Check each leg for one date

Leg What to verify What does not follow automatically
Walk to the coast Permitted route and exit instructions Leaving the park does not mean boarding the boat
Agia Roumeli boat Port and date, plus weekday and operator condition A timetable is not a weather guarantee
Bus after arrival Correct stop and destination, plus connection condition Not every boat has every onward bus
Car recovery Exact parking location and service that reaches it A bus to a wider area may not reach the car
Final local leg Travel from the arrival stop to your base The intercity station is not a hotel transfer

Save the carrier details with the tickets. Include the whole timetable row and any footnotes, rather than a cropped time. Keep a copy offline so the return does not depend on a signal at the end of the walk.

Missed connections and an overnight decision

If a required leg cannot be confirmed before the day, repair the plan first. Compare another route, a prearranged transfer or a reachable stay. Do not start on the assumption that a spare bus or taxi will be waiting.

If disruption occurs later, follow the carrier and local staff. Ask which port, stop and service apply to the revised plan. Check the price and scope of a replacement transfer before agreeing. A quote to one destination is not a general fare to every base.

An overnight stay also needs a real arrival plan and room confirmation. A cancelled boat does not guarantee a room or decide another provider's refund terms. Keep those conditions separate when arranging the day.

If your final base is Heraklion, the Heraklion planning guide considers the longer return. Do not stop the plan at Chania if you still need another intercity leg that evening.

Park permission comes first

Facts checked: 15 October 2026. NECCA reported both entrances closed pending inspections, with no reopening date. This return reference explains the route choices; it does not confirm that a crossing is permitted now.

Use the transport guide to inspect the individual connections. Check the official notice again before travelling for the hike. A boat or bus serving the coast can continue to have a purpose even when park entry is unavailable.

Return questions

Which side is best for reaching a parked car?

Start with the exact car location, then ask which dated land service reaches it from the coast. A general Omalos label needs a stop check if the car is near Xyloskalo. Do not choose a ferry side solely from the map. The actual connection must serve the final recovery task.

Does the park exit count as the ferry departure point?

No. You still need to reach the coastal boarding point and follow the carrier's instructions. A walking time ending at the controlled exit leaves out that part. Keep the village and port task in the plan before deciding that the full walk fits a particular boat departure.

Are separate tickets a protected connection?

Read the terms of the actual services. Separate bookings should not be assumed to protect each other against delays. If an organiser sells a combined trip, ask what is included and how disruption is handled. A timetable footnote does not replace those terms for every traveller and route.

What if I cannot confirm a last bus?

Settle the gap before entering the trail. A private transfer or overnight may be an option only when you have confirmed the price, destination and availability with the provider. Do not treat an unlisted bus or an informal hope of a lift as part of a complete return plan.

Verdict on how to get back from Samaria Gorge

How to get back from Samaria Gorge is answered by the whole chain, not one ferry time. Name the final base or car, choose the suitable port and confirm each onward leg. Keep that plan beside the current park notice before deciding that the walk fits your day.
