Paleochora to Samaria Gorge needs a route choice before a ticket choice. A boat can take you towards Agia Roumeli. That serves a coastal or permitted southern visit. A full downhill crossing starts at Xyloskalo instead. Choose the entrance your walk needs, then arrange the travel around it.
For a southern plan, check the boat in both directions. Use the same date and include any stops or vessel changes. A full north-side walk needs a separate mountain approach. It needs a way back to your base too. A ferry arrival at the coast does not put you at the northern trailhead.
Paleochora to Samaria Gorge by the coast
The ANENDYK route page uses both Paleochora and Palaiochora spellings. Match the port on your ticket. The route towards Agia Roumeli can include Sougia. Read that text as well as the final destination.
Here is a dated example from the operator's table. The period is 7 September–31 October 2026. It lists 08:30 from Palaiochora towards Agia Roumeli on each weekday. Wednesday also shows a later entry. This was checked on 15 October 2026.
Use the full current table for your day. Read any later amendments too. A time from one published period does not cover the whole year.
This is a published timetable observation, not a guarantee of operation. The operator uses local time and marks passenger-only departures. A vehicle plan must be checked against the exact sailing, rather than inferred from the word ferry.
Southern visit or full crossing?
If you arrive by boat at Agia Roumeli, you begin on the southern side. A partial park walk, when allowed, goes in from that entrance and returns to the coast. Check the permitted extent and exit time before using a timetable gap as walking time.
The full downhill crossing starts on the mountain side. Reaching that start needs a different outward plan. A coastal boat does not take you to Xyloskalo. There is no public road between the entrances through the gorge.
For a road transfer question, the taxi planning guide shows what a precise quote needs to name. Its Chania example is not a fare or service promise from Paleochora. Ask an actual operator about your own origin and destination.
Check the return before leaving
Find the Agia Roumeli-to-Paleochora direction independently. Do not reverse the morning row. Keep the return's validity range and weekday, along with any route condition. Confirm boarding instructions and what happens if weather affects the service.
If the itinerary includes a change, save where and when it takes place. A through destination on a website does not always mean remaining on one vessel. Ask the carrier if the published description is unclear.
The transport reference explains why the final base should guide the route choice. A boat to Sougia or Sfakia does not complete a return to Paleochora merely because all three are south-coast ports.
Admission and separate costs
Read the exact ferry fare and traveller category in the current operator selection. Check what a package includes if you buy one. A standalone boat ticket should not be assumed to cover park admission, a meal or a land transfer.
At the check above, NECCA's ticket portal reported both Samaria entrances closed pending inspections. No reopening date was stated. A boat service to Agia Roumeli does not grant a southern walking exception.
If the park is the only reason for the trip, read the access notice before arranging the sea legs. If you would enjoy a village-only visit, assess it as that separate day. Keep the carrier's terms attached to the boat booking either way.
Paleochora questions
Can I start the full downhill hike after arriving by boat?
A boat towards Agia Roumeli brings you to the southern coast, not to Xyloskalo. The usual downhill crossing starts in the mountains. Choose the walking direction before arranging transport. A permitted southern visit has its own extent and return, and should not be confused with the full north-to-south route.
Are Paleochora and Palaiochora different ports?
They are spellings used for the same western coastal destination in the operator's information. Check the actual port and route on your booking. Similar spelling does not remove the need to confirm the direction and date, especially when the itinerary also names Sougia or another intermediate place.
Does a morning boat guarantee enough walking time?
No. Check arrival and return details, then the current entrance permission and walking limit. The time between two boats is not all available inside the park. You must reach the entrance and return to the boarding point, following the carrier's and park's instructions for that day.
Can I use a different coastal port for the return?
Only if you have arranged the further travel to your actual base. Sougia, Sfakia and Paleochora lead to different road tasks. Confirm the whole chain rather than choosing any available boat. Separate carrier terms also matter if a delay affects an onward service you bought independently.
Verdict on Paleochora to Samaria Gorge
Plan Paleochora to Samaria Gorge around the entrance you mean to use. The coastal route serves Agia Roumeli, while a northern start needs a different approach. Confirm both sea directions and current park access before treating the day as a workable walk rather than only a boat excursion.
