How to get to Samaria Gorge depends first on the entrance and walk you mean to use. The northern approach leads to Xyloskalo, on the Omalos side. The southern approach leads to Agia Roumeli on the coast. They serve different day plans, so a single map pin called Samaria is not enough.

For the full downhill crossing, reach the northern entrance and arrange a separate return from the south. For a permitted southern out-and-back, travel to Agia Roumeli and return from the same coast. Check access before either plan. Then match every transport leg to the same date, including the final ride to your room or parked car.

How to get to Samaria Gorge: choose the entrance

The Visit Greece description identifies Xyloskalo as the mountain start and Agia Roumeli as the southern destination. Those names are the basis of a useful transport search. The first decision is which one belongs at the beginning of your walk.

Intended visit Starting side Transport problem to solve
Full north-to-south crossing Xyloskalo Reach the mountain start, then return from the coast
Southern partial walk Agia Roumeli Reach the coastal entrance and allow a return walk and boat
Northern partial walk Xyloskalo Return uphill to the same entrance within the permitted extent
Village-only visit Agia Roumeli Match the sea legs or arrange a stay, without assuming park entry

These are planning choices, not entry permissions. The actual route extent and opening instruction can differ on the day. Read the current authority notice before treating a partial visit as available.

A full crossing is not a loop. If the outward journey ends at the north entrance, the return starts from a different side of the mountains. The journey is complete only when you can reach your base or vehicle after leaving the coast.

Match your base to the entrance

Chania is a common starting point for a north-side plan. From there, the road approach is towards Omalos and Xyloskalo. If you are staying elsewhere, add the travel to that approach instead of copying a city-centre departure as your whole outward journey.

For a base near the south coast, a boat towards Agia Roumeli may make more sense for a permitted southern visit. It is not a shortcut to the northern entrance. A route that arrives by sea begins at the opposite end from the usual downhill crossing.

From farther east, consider the whole day's travel burden. An intercity approach must fit the mountain start and the final return, not only one of them. If that cannot be confirmed on one day, an overnight on the western side may be a separate option to compare.

Where you sleep can simplify one end while complicating the other. A room near the plateau may help the morning but leave a car-recovery task after the coast. A coastal stay may suit a southern visit while requiring a boat to reach or leave it.

Public transport to the north side

Use KTEL Chania–Rethymno for its current schedules and official booking service. Check the north-side destination and actual stop for the date you intend. If the result says Omalos, confirm whether it serves the Xyloskalo entrance you need.

Get the boarding point from the carrier or ticket. An intercity station and a local city-bus stop are different places. Include the trip from your lodging to that point. Do not assume that an airport coach or resort bus delivers you directly to the mountain departure.

Save the route heading and any weekday conditions with the ticket. A departure time copied without its validity range can be misleading later. Recheck current announcements before the day, especially if the north-side service is seasonal.

The bus ticket should be read for its actual scope. It may be only the outward land leg. Do not assume that park admission, the ferry and the bus home are included. A combined arrangement must state those legs rather than leave you to infer them from a tour title.

Private transfer to the start

A private taxi or transfer can suit a pickup point that does not fit the public bus. The useful benefit is flexibility at the beginning of the day. Its limit is the exact service you have bought: a one-way road transfer does not solve a southern return.

Ask for a written quote naming the pickup, date and final drop-off. State the number of passengers and any luggage or seating needs. A quote to an Omalos lodging address is different from a quote to the park entrance.

If a return is offered, ask how it works after the one-way walk. Name the sea leg and the port where a road pickup begins. A broad “return transfer” line is not enough if it leaves those steps unclear.

Read what happens if the park closes or the trip is cancelled. A closure notice and a private transport booking are separate matters. Do not assume the authority's decision automatically defines the driver's refund rule.

Driving and the car recovery task

Driving can make the outward departure more flexible. It also leaves the vehicle where the walk starts. If the plan is a full crossing, write down how you will get back to that parking place after reaching Agia Roumeli.

Confirm the current parking rules at the actual area. Follow signs and staff instructions, including any charge or access time. Do not use an old photo of parked cars as proof that a space is permitted or free today.

A recovery plan needs an arrival port, the onward road service and the correct stop. ANENDYK's timetable refers travellers to KTEL about connections from Sougia towards Omalos and Chania. Check which service actually reaches the car location on your date.

A bus returning to Chania is not automatically a car recovery solution. It may be useful for a traveller whose room is in the city, while leaving a mountain-side car elsewhere. Compare the complete driving plan with the complete bus plan before deciding which is simpler.

Reaching the southern entrance

For a southern visit, start by looking at the boats towards Agia Roumeli. Use the ANENDYK route page and choose the correct origin and direction. Keep the published date range and weekday with the departure you find.

The coast has several distinct ports. Hora Sfakion lies on the east-side approach, while Sougia and Paleochora serve western plans. They are not interchangeable simply because the route search includes all of them. Choose the port you can reach and return from on the intended day.

The Paleochora-to-Samaria guide explains the western coastal approach. If you are based there, do not use a northern-start itinerary as though the morning boat delivers you to Xyloskalo. It reaches the southern side instead.

If a route requires a vessel change, keep that in the plan. Do not assume that a through destination means staying on one boat. Check any luggage or assistance needs with the actual carrier, as well as whether a marked sailing carries passengers only.

A boat day is not all walking time

Allow for arrival at the coast, reaching the park entrance and returning to the boarding point. The gap between two boat times is not entirely available inside the gorge. The current permitted entrance period and walking extent also set limits.

Set a turnaround before entering on an out-and-back visit. Do not keep walking solely because the gates look close on a map. The return covers the same ground, and your next boat still has its own boarding requirements.

If a coastal overnight is part of the plan, confirm the room and arrival arrangement separately. A ferry ticket does not guarantee that a particular lodging is open or holding a room. Keep those details with the sea booking before deciding how late you can return.

Full crossing versus a partial walk

The full crossing includes the upper route and leads towards the coastal finish. It suits someone who wants that complete sequence and can manage the long walking day. Its transport is more involved because the start and finish are different.

A southern partial visit focuses on a permitted part of the lower gorge. It returns to the same coast but repeats the walking ground. A northern partial visit returns to the mountain side and includes the climb back to the start. Neither should be described as the full crossing with less effort.

Choose the walk from the permitted route and your party's recent walking experience. A downhill route can still be tiring on uneven stones. A short out-and-back can include steep work on the return. Do not make a fast online time your personal target.

The Ephorate's park account describes the route from Xyloskalo through the former village and towards the lower gorge. Use it for orientation. For today's entry and route restrictions, use NECCA and the instructions at the entrance.

Check admission and the return before leaving

Facts checked: 15 October 2026. NECCA's official ticket portal reported both entrances closed pending inspections. It gave no reopening date. Neither a transport service nor a tour listing overrides that notice.

When entry is permitted, use the official admission destination for its actual categories and terms. Do not read an empty checkout total as the ticket price. Check any documents needed for the category you select, then read the safety instructions before buying.

Keep admission and travel costs separate unless the package expressly includes them. A bus fare, ferry ticket and room reservation are different purchases. Compare totals only when they cover the same people and complete service scope.

Read the entrance name on each record one last time. A ticket for the north approach and a room near the southern coast may both be valid, yet still need a walking or sea connection between them. Name that link before leaving.

Before leaving your base, check that the last required leg works as well as the first. For a full crossing, that includes leaving the coastal side. For a partial walk, it includes the return to the starting entrance and any onward boat or road service.

A departure-day checklist

  • Access: Read the current notice for the intended entrance.
  • Route: Confirm full crossing or permitted partial walk.
  • Outward travel: Keep the actual date and boarding point.
  • Finish: Name the park exit separately from the village or port.
  • Return: Confirm every required sea and land leg.
  • Car: Retain the exact parking point if recovery is needed.
  • Supplies: Pack the food, water and clothing your plan needs.
  • Records: Save tickets, meeting points and contacts offline.

The main transport guide brings the named connections together. Use it to inspect a particular leg once the entrance and overall route are settled. It is easier to compare transport when you already know what job each leg must do.

Questions about reaching Samaria

Which entrance should I put into a route planner?

Use the entrance that matches your intended walk: Xyloskalo for the usual northern start, or the Agia Roumeli side for a permitted southern visit. A general Samaria pin may refer to another part of the protected area. Check the endpoint before following the suggested road or sea route.

Can I arrive at one entrance and drive away from the other?

A full crossing leaves you away from a car parked at the start. The southern side needs its own onward travel, often including a boat. Do not assume a road pickup at the park exit. Name the coastal port and final destination when arranging the return or car recovery.

Does an organised trip remove the walking demands?

No. Arranged transport can take booking tasks off your hands, but the route remains a gorge walk. Check the guide scope, included costs and return arrangements in the actual itinerary. Choose the walk for your party's ability and the current permission, rather than treating a package as a safety guarantee.

What if one leg has no confirmed service?

Resolve that gap before leaving for the walk. Compare another route, a prearranged transfer or an overnight with real terms. An unlisted bus or hoped-for lift is not a confirmed leg. If disruption occurs later, follow current carrier instructions and keep the conditions of separate bookings in mind.

Verdict on how to get to Samaria Gorge

How to get to Samaria Gorge becomes clearer once the entrance and walking route are fixed. Check permission first, then connect the correct start to the actual finish. Keep the final base or car in view so that the day ends with a workable return rather than only a successful arrival.
